About Look Good Feel Better
Look Good Feel Better (LGFB) is a free community service program run throughout Australia. LGFB helps women, men and teens undergoing cancer treatment to manage the appearance-related side effects of chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Their dedicated workshops help participants to build skills relating to skincare, make-up and headwear options that can improve wellbeing and confidence.
For those undergoing treatment, this unique not-for-profit organisation helps shift the focus away from the things they are losing by giving them practical tools and knowledge to regain their confidence and sense of control.
More than 170,000 women, men and teenagers undergoing cancer treatment across Australia have benefited from the Look Good Feel Better program. Each year LGFB hold around 1,000 face-to-face workshops in 180 venues across Australia.
Skills, tips and tricks acquired during the 2.5hr workshops can help with the appearance related side effects of treatment such as skin redness, discolouration or dry patches. For many, hair loss is a big concern so the LGFB workshops demonstrate how to draw on eyebrows as well as how to build confidence by using hats, scarves, turbans and wigs.
“As much as we talk about the appearance related side effects, we see a change in outlook in our workshops so we’re helping to make a difference inside and out.”
Carol Kavurma, General Manager of LGFB
Lifelong bonds that are more than skin deep
Its not only the appearance-related skills that come out of these workshops, for many friendships, support networks and unbreakable bonds are formed by the participants that can provide comfort while navigating the diagnosis and treatment experience.
“It gave me a place to find the understanding and connection I’d been desperately seeking.”
Workshop participant, Vicky
Making a difference nation-wide
LGFB operate nation-wide with close to half of their venues located in regional areas. In addition to the workshops they also have home-delivered Confidence Kits which are for patients who can’t attend the workshops for any reason. These kits comprise all the cosmetics and skincare products that they would receive in the workshop as well as instructions and video options so they can learn and use the products at home.
Look Good Feel Better are not-for-profit and so every dollar they receive goes straight back into the program. It costs about $1000 to run a workshop and each year about $1.3 million is required to run the program overall.
“Because of my Mum’s experience at the workshop, that day her self-confidence came back. Just seeing her smile made me so grateful that a program like this exists.”
Workshop participant, Kelly
